Follow these simple steps to collect and return your DNA samples correctly.
Always follow the instructions supplied with your specific DNA test kit. If your kit instructions differ from this general guide, the instructions included with your kit take precedence.
Standard / Peace-of-Mind DNA Sample Collection
See what sample your test requires
Many DNA tests use a simple cheek swab that can be collected at home. Some tests use other sample types — always check your kit.
- 01
Prepare Your Kit
Open your DNA kit and identify the oral swabs, sample envelopes, instructions and consent form.
- 02
Complete the Forms
Complete the required information on the sample envelopes and consent form before collecting the samples.
- 03
Prepare for Collection
Do not eat, drink or smoke for one hour before collection. Wash your hands before handling the swabs.
- 04
Collect the Cheek Sample
Remove the oral swabs without touching the cotton tip. Firmly rub the inside of the cheek as directed in your kit instructions.
Use all swabs provided for each person, following the instructions included with your specific kit.
- 05
Dry & Package
Allow the collected swabs to dry as directed in your kit instructions. Return each dry swab to the correct labelled sample envelope.
Keep samples from different people separate. Do not allow them to come into contact.
- 06
Seal & Return
Place the completed sample envelopes and required forms into the return packaging and send your samples using the return instructions provided with your kit.
A trackable courier service is recommended when applicable.

Independent Collector
Sample collection must be observed and completed by an unrelated third-party collector with no interest in the test outcome.
- 03
Documentation
Required consent and Chain of Custody documentation must be completed accurately.
- 04
Secure Chain of Custody
Samples and paperwork must remain under secure control until shipment.
