How the process works

Use the guided Test Finder or call a coordinator. We confirm which participants are needed and whether you need a personal or documented, legal test.

Choose your collection route
Attend our Richmond centre, arrange coordinated collection in Vancouver, elsewhere in Canada or internationally, or use a private home kit where a documented test is not required.
- Step 03
Identity verification and consent
For documented tests, government-issued identification is checked, photographs and signatures are recorded, and guardian consent is obtained for minors.
- Step 04
Sealed transfer to a laboratory partner
Samples are sealed, labelled and transferred to a qualified, accredited laboratory partner. DNA analysis is performed there as part of the KINORA GENETICS testing process.
- Step 05
Report release and explanation
The partner laboratory's report is released to you through the secure portal, and your coordinator explains what it does and does not indicate.

Sample types that may be considered
Cheek swabs are the standard collection method. Other sample types may be considered case by case; DNA recovery from non-standard samples can never be guaranteed.
Cheek swab (standard)
Painless buccal swabs are the standard sample for paternity testing and the only sample type used for professionally collected legal tests.
Non-standard samples
Items such as hair with roots, a used toothbrush or nail clippings may be considered for personal testing only, subject to case review. Recovery of usable DNA cannot be guaranteed.
Prenatal enquiries
Prenatal paternity enquiries are handled case by case and always require discussion with a coordinator before any collection is arranged.

Frequently asked questions
When the alleged father is not excluded, the accredited laboratory partner reports a probability of paternity calculated from many genetic markers. When he is excluded, the markers show he cannot be the biological father. The report explains the statistics; no result is described as guaranteed.

Typically 3–7 business days after all required samples are received by the laboratory. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date.
Cheek swab samples are collected from the child and the alleged father (and where helpful, the mother). Kinora Genetics verifies identity, documents consent, and transfers the sealed samples to an accredited laboratory partner, which compares genetic markers and issues the report.
It is not always required, but including the mother's sample can strengthen the statistical interpretation. Your coordinator will advise based on who is available.
A personal test is for your own knowledge and has no documented chain of custody. A legal test uses professional collection with identity verification and documented chain of custody, which is what courts, lawyers and authorities normally expect. We cannot guarantee any particular organisation will accept a report.
No. Kinora Genetics requires informed consent from every tested participant, and guardian consent for minors. We do not support covert or non-consensual testing.
