Samples

Sample types that may be considered

Cheek swabs are the standard collection method. Other sample types may be considered case by case; DNA recovery from non-standard samples can never be guaranteed.

Cheek swab (required)

Professionally collected buccal swabs are the only sample type used for immigration and other official testing.

No self-collected material

Home kits, toothbrushes, hair and similar items cannot support an official file, because their origin and handling cannot be documented.

Overseas collection

Participants outside Canada are collected by an arranged professional under the same identity-verification and sealing requirements.

U.S. Immigration DNA Testing

U.S. immigration-related DNA testing may be subject to specific federal requirements regarding laboratory accreditation, case initiation, participant identification, professional collection, and chain of custody.

Where U.S. immigration authorities require DNA testing, the testing pathway must follow the applicable requirements of the requesting authority and the qualified laboratory involved. Accreditation details belong to the named laboratory partner and are listed on our laboratory accreditation page.

Canadian Immigration DNA Testing

DNA testing may be used as supporting evidence of a biological relationship in certain immigration or citizenship-related circumstances when requested or accepted by the relevant Canadian authority.

It is a relationship DNA test collected under professional conditions, with identity verification and documented chain of custody, so the resulting report can be submitted as supporting evidence of a claimed family relationship in an immigration file.

Most commonly parent-child (paternity or maternity). Sibling, half-sibling, grandparent and other kinship comparisons can also be arranged where a direct parent-child comparison is not possible.

No. Immigration and other official files require professionally collected samples with identity verification and documented chain of custody. Self-collected samples cannot be used for this purpose.

Acceptance is always decided by the receiving authority, and requirements differ by country and case. Kinora Genetics coordinates collection and documentation to accepted professional standards, but cannot promise that any authority, embassy or court will accept a report.

Yes. Your coordinator arranges collection for overseas participants and aligns the documentation with the Canadian side of the case, so both samples reach the same accredited laboratory partner.

No. Participants can be collected on different dates and in different countries. Each collection is documented separately and linked to the same case reference.

No testing provider can guarantee acceptance by an immigration authority. Requirements may depend on the specific case and the instructions provided by the relevant authority. If you have received a DNA testing request or written instruction, send it to us before booking so we can review the applicable testing and collection requirements.

Yes. Participants in Canada attend our Richmond DNA Testing & Collection Centre or a collector we coordinate. For participants outside Canada we arrange collection through partner collection networks, and the collection kit and documentation are sent to the collector rather than to the participant. Availability, cost and timelines vary by country and are confirmed in writing before you book. We cannot arrange collection everywhere.

Every adult participant presents valid government-issued photo identification at the collection appointment — for example a passport, permanent resident card or driver's licence. For a child, the accompanying parent or legal guardian presents their own photo ID plus the child's identity document where one exists, and signs consent on the child's behalf. Identification is checked and recorded by the collector, and a photograph of the participant is taken where the applicable procedure requires it.

Official testing has to show not only what the DNA says but also that the sample genuinely came from the named person. A collector verifies identity against photo ID, witnesses the collection, seals the sample in tamper-evident packaging and signs the chain-of-custody record that travels with the sample to the laboratory partner. A sample collected privately at home has no independent record of who provided it.

No. A home collection kit is a personal-knowledge test: nobody verifies who provided the sample, so it carries no chain-of-custody record. Immigration and legal matters require witnessed, identity-verified collection. If you have already taken a home test, the personal result cannot be converted into an official one — the collection has to be repeated professionally.
