Relationship & kinship
Relationship DNA Testing in Canada
Relationship DNA testing answers family questions when a straightforward parent-child comparison is not available. Kinora Genetics coordinates sibling, half-sibling, grandparent, aunt/uncle and wider kinship testing across Canada, including cases where relatives live in different provinces or countries.
We advise on which relatives to include, verify identity, collect samples at our Richmond centre or through coordinated appointments, and release the report issued by an accredited laboratory partner. Kinship results are expressed as likelihoods, so we set expectations before any sample is taken.

Who it is for
Is this the right service for your situation?
- Siblings or half-siblings confirming a shared biological parent
- Grandparents establishing a biological link to a grandchild when the parent is unavailable
- Aunts and uncles supporting a relationship claim for a niece or nephew
- Adoptees and separated relatives who have found a possible biological match
- Estate, guardianship or immigration matters where a documented kinship report is requested
What to expect
How the process works
- Step 01
Map the family question
A coordinator reviews who is available and recommends the comparison most likely to be informative, including any additional relative worth adding.
- Step 02
Confirm the test type
Decide whether you need a personal report or a professionally collected, documented test for a legal, estate or immigration file.
- Step 03
Collection
Cheek swabs are collected at our Richmond centre, by coordinated appointment across Canada, or via a private home kit for personal testing only.
- Step 04
Analysis by a laboratory partner
Sealed samples are transferred to a qualified, accredited laboratory partner, which compares markers and calculates a likelihood for the stated relationship.
- Step 05
Report and interpretation
You receive the report securely, and your coordinator explains the likelihood ranges, including what an inconclusive outcome would mean.
Samples
Sample types that may be considered
Cheek swabs are the standard collection method. Other sample types may be considered case by case; DNA recovery from non-standard samples can never be guaranteed.
Cheek swab (standard)
Buccal swabs from each participating relative are the standard, and the only option for documented testing.
Additional relatives
Adding a further tested relative often improves how conclusive a kinship comparison can be; your coordinator will say when it is worth doing.
Lineage options
Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA comparisons can address specific paternal-line or maternal-line questions where autosomal kinship testing is limited.
Full detail on accepted material is in the DNA samples guide, or check a specific item with the sample assessment tool.
Limitations
What this service does not do
- Kinship comparisons produce likelihoods and can be inconclusive; no result is guaranteed
- We do not promise court, tribunal or authority acceptance of any report
- We do not own or operate a laboratory; accredited laboratory partners perform all analysis
- Every participant must consent, and a guardian must consent for a minor; covert testing is not supported
- Reports are not medical or diagnostic assessments and do not provide health information
