Why the cheek swab is the preferred DNA sample, and how to collect it correctly.
A typical scenario
A parent is worried a DNA test will be uncomfortable for a young child. The cheek swab is painless and quick.
Why cheek swabs
Cheek cells provide reliable DNA, collection is non-invasive, and the risk of a failed sample is low when instructions are followed.
The procedure
- A sterile cheek swab is rotated against the inside of the left cheek for about one minute; three swabs are taken from the left cheek.
- The same is repeated on the right cheek with three more swabs.
- Swabs must not touch hands, clothing, food or surfaces.
- Each swab is placed directly into the designated sealed sample bag.
- The same procedure is completed for every participant.
Common mistakes
Touching the swab tip, collecting straight after eating, or letting swabs touch each other can compromise the sample and may require re-collection.
