The standard sample
A cheek (buccal) swab is the standard sample because it reliably yields good-quality DNA and is simple to collect. Whenever a participant is available and consenting, a cheek swab is the recommended choice.
Special or non-standard samples
Special samples are sometimes considered when a cheek swab is not possible. Examples include hair with roots, nail clippings, a used toothbrush, or chewing gum. These samples carry important limitations:
- DNA quantity and quality vary widely, so successful recovery cannot be guaranteed
- Additional laboratory processing and fees usually apply
- Results may take longer, and a repeat sample may be requested
- Special samples are not accepted for legal or official testing
Consent matters
KINORA GENETICS requires that every sample be provided with the knowledge and consent of the person tested, or their legal guardian. We do not support covert or non-consensual testing.
