The single difference that matters
Both tests analyse the same markers. A legal test adds identity verification, a supervised collection appointment and a documented chain of custody. A personal test does not.
When a personal test is enough
- You want an answer for yourself or your family
- No institution needs to review the report
- No court, agency or registry is involved
When you need a legal test
- Court proceedings
- Child support or custody matters
- Birth registry amendments
- Immigration applications
You cannot upgrade afterwards
A personal test cannot be converted into a legal one later, because the identity of the sample donors was never independently verified. If there is any chance an institution will need the result, choose legal collection from the start.
