Why special samples exist

When a cheek swab is not possible — the person is unavailable or deceased — a personal item that carries their cells may be considered instead.

Items commonly submitted

  • Toothbrush used regularly and recently
  • Hair with visible root material attached
  • Nail clippings
  • Chewing gum
  • Cigarette butts
  • Used drinking straws or similar items

No guarantees

Special samples are viability-dependent. Age, moisture, heat, handling and contamination all affect whether a usable profile can be obtained. Some items yield nothing at all, and a repeat attempt with a different item may be needed.

Consent still applies

You must have the right to submit the item and the donor's consent. We do not support covert testing.

Handling

Handle with clean hands or gloves, air dry, and use paper — never sealed plastic, which traps moisture.
