"How much does a paternity test cost in Canada?" has no single answer, because the price depends on the type of test, how the samples are collected, how many people are tested, and where they are located. This guide explains each cost factor so you can compare quotations properly and avoid surprises.
For current pricing and to start a test, see our Paternity DNA Test page or contact us for a written quotation.
The four things that set the price
- Personal (peace-of-mind) versus legal testing. A personal test answers the question for the family only. A legal test adds identity verification, witnessed collection, photographs and documented chain of custody, so it costs more — that documentation is the reason it can be used for an official file.
- How the sample is collected. A standard cheek swab is the baseline. Professional collection at a centre, a mobile appointment, or collection at a partner clinic each adds a fee. Special samples — for example a discreet or non-standard specimen — require extra laboratory work and are priced separately, with no guarantee that a usable DNA profile can be recovered.
- How many participants are tested. A standard case compares one alleged father and one child. Each additional child or second alleged father is an extra participant fee. Testing the biological mother is optional in a personal case and often included in a legal one.
- Where the participants are. Local collection in Canada is the simplest case. If a participant is in another country, the quotation has to include kit dispatch, an approved local collector, and tracked international courier in both directions.
Costs people forget to compare
| Cost item | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Collection fee | Any professionally collected or legal test |
| Additional participant | More than one child, or a second alleged father |
| Mobile or on-site collection | Collection at home, hospital or a lawyer's office |
| Special or non-standard sample | When a cheek swab is not possible |
| International courier | Any participant outside Canada |
| Rush or expedited handling | When you need results sooner than standard turnaround |
| Hard-copy or courier report delivery | When a paper report must reach a representative or office |
| Notarization or extra certified copies | Court, immigration or estate matters |
A quotation that looks cheaper is often quoting the laboratory analysis only. Compare the total delivered cost — collection, shipping and reporting included.
Personal versus legal testing
- Personal test: the result is for your own knowledge. It is the lower-cost option and the right choice when nobody needs to submit the result anywhere.
- Legal test: identity is verified against government-issued photo ID, the collection is witnessed and documented, and custody of the samples is recorded at every transfer. This is the version required for court matters, child support, birth-registration changes and immigration files. Acceptance is always decided by the receiving authority.
Paying for a personal test first and a legal test later means paying twice. If there is any chance the result will be used officially, order the legal version from the start.
Immigration cases cost more, for a reason
Immigration files require professional collection, verified identity and unbroken chain of custody, usually with participants in two countries. The additional cost comes from kit dispatch, an approved collector abroad, and international courier — not from a different laboratory test. See our Immigration DNA Testing page and our immigration DNA testing guide for the full process.
Is a paternity test covered by insurance or public health care?
Paternity testing is elective and is normally paid privately. It is not covered by provincial health plans, and private insurance rarely covers relationship testing. In litigation, the party that requests the test usually pays, or the parties share the cost — that is a matter for your lawyer, not the laboratory.
Timelines affect cost too
Standard turnaround is measured from the day the final sample reaches the laboratory. If you need results faster, expedited handling is priced as an add-on. Booking all participants early is free and usually saves more time than paying for a rush.
How to get an accurate quotation
Have this ready and a written quotation takes minutes:
- Whether the result is for personal knowledge or for official use.
- Who will be tested, and each person's city and country.
- Whether a cheek swab is possible for everyone.
- Any deadline you have to meet.
- Where the report needs to be delivered.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest paternity test accurate? Accuracy comes from the laboratory analysis, and a properly performed cheek-swab test gives the same genetic answer at any price point. What the price changes is the documentation, the collection standard and the support around it — which is exactly what an official file depends on.
Do I have to pay per person? A standard case covers one alleged father and one child. Additional participants are charged individually.
Does testing the mother cost extra? In a personal test it is optional and priced as an additional participant. In legal cases her inclusion is often expected as part of the documented comparison.
Can I use a pharmacy home kit to save money? For personal curiosity, yes. For anything official — court, child support, birth registration, immigration — no, because a self-collected kit has no verified identity or chain of custody.
Why is a prenatal or special-sample test more expensive? Both require additional laboratory work and, for special samples, there is no guarantee a usable DNA profile can be recovered from the specimen.
Are results guaranteed to be accepted by a court or immigration office? No provider can guarantee that. We coordinate collection and documentation to accepted professional standards; the receiving authority decides.
