How personal and legal paternity tests differ, and why the intended use must be decided before collection.

A typical scenario

A father first orders a personal test, then learns the result is needed for a family court matter — and has to test again.

Personal testing

Designed for private knowledge. It uses the same laboratory analysis but does not include identity verification or chain of custody, so it is not intended for formal use.

Legal testing

Includes identity verification, impartial professional collection and a documented chain of custody so the report can be presented in a formal process. The receiving party decides whether it accepts the report.

Why decide first

A personal report generally cannot be converted into a legal report afterwards.
