Why a cheek swab is the preferred sample
Cheek swabs are painless, non-invasive and quick to collect, which makes them practical for adults, children and infants alike. They are easy to package, ship in a standard collection kit and store at room temperature during transit.
Because the sample is collected in a controlled way with sterile swabs, the biological material is usually well suited to DNA extraction — which helps keep timelines and outcomes predictable compared with items that were never intended as DNA samples.
How collection works
For personal-knowledge testing, we can send a home collection kit with swabs, participant forms and return packaging. For legal or official testing, collection is normally witnessed at our Richmond DNA Testing & Collection Centre or coordinated with a partner collector, with identity verification and documented chain of custody.
Samples are then transferred to a qualified, accredited laboratory partner for analysis. Reported timelines are estimates and begin once the laboratory partner has received all required samples.
Good practice
- Avoid eating, drinking or smoking shortly before collection.
- Each participant uses their own labelled swabs and envelope.
- Consent is required from every participant, or from a parent or legal guardian.
- Legal and official testing generally requires witnessed collection rather than a self-collected sample.
